The Art of Meditation

Yoga is the freedom from mental disturbances

Yoga sutras of Pantanjali 1.2 (ancient yogic text)

Many people meditate to release tension and establish a sense of calm. Others report that meditation help with focus in the work place, sharpening their intellect. Still others use meditation as a way to express devotion and live from their hearts. Meditation is all of this and more it is a highly individualised process, it’s about becoming more aware of your inner environment.

A wise man once said “you can go outside to get what you want or you can go inside and let it come to you”

Going inside is meditation – the energy efficient solution to high quality living. Yoga awakens you to yourself, and meditation settles you into yourself. You do not have to practice yoga postures to enjoy the benefits of meditation. Many activities are meditative walking gardening painting drawing surfing anything that gives us the one pointed focus this is known as dhyana.

Stages of meditation

As you develop your practice of meditation you will most likely find yourself moving through progressively deeper levels of stillness.

When you first meditate you will get drawn into the minds drama, then you will realise you’ve been drawn in. Little by little you begin to watch the mental activity, as would an observer, you just watch the mind. This is the process of pratyahara or inner focus.
